How to give Anapen®

How to give Anapen
1 PULL OFF NEEDLE SHIELD
2 PULL OFF GREY SAFETY CAP from red button
3 Place needle end firmly against outer mid thigh at 90 degree angle with or without clothing
4 Press red button so it clicks and hold for 3 seconds. Remove Anapen

After Anapen® is used, put it to one side and do not touch the exposed needle. After phoning ambulance, place needle into wide end of the black needle shield, or place the used Anapen® in a container. Provide ambulance with the used Anapen® and the time it was given.

Note: When an adrenaline (epinephrine) infjector device is being given (or self administered) the person having anaphylaxis should be laying flat, in the recovery position or sitting with their legs outstretched. They should remain in this position (not standing or walking) after the device has been given, until they have fully recovered.  More information about positioning is on the ASCIA website https://www.allergy.org.au/hp/anaphylaxis/positioning which includes infographics and a video.

A short animated video on how to give Anapen® is available on the Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia website: https://allergyfacts.org.au/resources/videos-from-a-aa#anapgive
