New national medical laboratory workforce certification scheme

The Board of the Australian Council for the Certification of the Medical Scientific Laboratory Workforce (ACCMLSW) is pleased to announce the national certification scheme for the medical laboratory workforce was officially launched on 1 July 2020. A webinar about the certification scheme is  available at

Almost 150 scientists and technicians have already obtained certification during the pilot phase. Certification is public recognition of scientific qualification, acknowledgement of participation in continuing education and increases professional credibility and prestige of scientists and technical officers in the industry. Importantly, certification and inclusion on a public register demonstrates a commitment to superior professionalism, support of industry standards and is aligned with competency development and assessment processes. Certified workers can expect an advantage in the recruitment process.

This has been a challenging start to 2020 and Australia’s success in the battle against COVID-19 owes much to our highly trained and competent scientific workforce to provide reliable and timely testing. The ACCMSLW would like to thank to these scientists and technical officers and recognise the challenges and sacrifices made by these professionals in delivering core services. From 1 July 2020, a 10% discount will apply to the normal certification fee for new registrants until the end of 2020.
