Erect up to 60cm. The leaves are erect and arise from a horizontal rosette and are lanceolate and narrow towards the base with 5-9 longitudinal prominent veins. The flowering stem has no leaves and the terminal flower extends beyond the surrounding leaves and is a cylindrical dense spike. It is a weed of lawns and roadsides and waste ground.
