Access to skin prick testing reagents

In 2008 Hollister Stier food allergen extracts for skin prick testing (SPT) were discontinued. In 2011 most of these allergens will be gradually reintroduced.  For details on which allergens are available contact Link Pharmaceuticals (see details below).

Medical practitioners can access currently unregistered diagnostic SPT extracts (Stallergenes Alyostal or ALK-Abello) using one of the following options:

(1) Section 19(5): Obtain "Authorised Prescriber status" by endorsement from the Royal Australasia College of Physicians (RACP) or the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA). This has now been obtained by ASCIA on behalf of its Full (ordinary) members who are fellows of the RACP or RCPA for both Stallergenes-Alyostal and ALK-Abello skin prick testing reagents.  ASCIA members need to email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to obtain the necessary documentation.

(2) Section 19(5): Obtain "Authorised Prescriber status" by endorsement by an ethics committee (possible for some but not all ASCIA members who work outside hospitals/universities).

NOTE:

Products available by the TGA 'Authorised Prescriber' option are not registered in Australia. Users are reminded that patient consent needs be obtained before use and there are also reporting requirements to the TGA about their use.

Histamine Positive Control is available from Link Pharmaceuticals under Section 19A2 of the of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, as Histamine is not currently registered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in Australia.  As this does not require Authorised Prescriber status it is open to all medical practitioners, without endorsement.

ASCIA Food Challenge Protocols

To access the PDF go to ASCIA Food Challenge Protocols (you must be logged in to view).

ASCIA food challenges protocols (for peanut, cow's milk, soy milk, wheat, cooked egg and baked egg) are used by ASCIA members to:

  • confirm suspected food allergies
  • identify useful food alternatives to known food allergies
  • confirm tolerance to foods when it appears likely that previous allergy has been outgrown.

Food challenges can result in potentially life threatening anaphylaxis and should therefore only be carried out by medical practitioners in carefully selected patients, under strict medical supervision and in consultation with a clinical immunology/allergy specialist.   For contact details of clinical immunology/allergy specialists who are experienced in using the ASCIA Food Challenge protocols please email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

ASCIA Food Challenge Protocols were developed by ASCIA members to standardise the protocols for food challlenges used by clinical immunology/allergy specialists in Australia and New Zealand. They have been peer reviewed by ASCIA members and are based on expert opinion and the available published literature at the time of review. The development of these protocols is not funded by any commercial sources and is not influenced by commercial organisations.  Clinical studies using these protocols are currently being conducted and protocols may be modified in the future, based on study outcomes.

Research news

The Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS) has launched a new bimonthly electronic publication called Translational Immunology Update. This publication contains highlights from the recent clinical immunology literature, updates on immune phenotyping and clinical trials, discussions of the scientific basis of new immune therapies, and summaries of concepts in basic immunology that are relevant to human disease and therapeutic strategies. It is anticipated that the FOCIS community will find this online publication interesting and valuable, and FOCIS welcomes feedback and suggestions.
