PRESS RELEASE - 21 FEBRUARY 2001
NEW NATIONAL ASTHMA CAMPAIGN MEMBER BODY
A collaboration of The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, Asthma Australia and the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy
Australia's peak asthma body, the National Asthma Campaign, has officially appointed the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) as its fifth member body, following a recent Annual General Meeting.
ASCIA joins The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia and Asthma Australia as part of the National Asthma Campaign.
Dr Ron Tomlins, Chairman of the National Asthma Campaign, said that ASCIA's appointment reflects the National Asthma Campaign's commitment to ongoing improvements in asthma management.
"The National Asthma Campaign will benefit greatly from ASCIA's appointment. The experience and research insights into allergy that ASCIA brings to asthma will help strengthen the foundation built by the National Asthma Campaign over the past 10 years as the leading asthma body in Australia," Dr Tomlins said.
"The National Asthma Campaign is committed to the ongoing education of people with asthma and ensures that health professionals have access to the latest asthma management practices. This recent appointment enables the National Asthma Campaign to strengthen its allergy expertise in the field of asthma.
Membership of the National Asthma Campaign entitles ASCIA to one position on the National Asthma Campaign board. This position will be filled by Dr Mimi Tang, Pediatric Immunologist and Allergist at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital who has now been officially endorsed as a National Asthma Campaign Director.
According to Dr Tang, ASCIA's appointment to the National Asthma Campaign provides an opportunity to raise greater awareness of allergy in asthma.
"As one of the Directors of the National Asthma Campaign, I have a wonderful opportunity to work with the National Asthma Campaign to improve asthma management through a greater understanding of allergy," Dr Tang said.
ASCIA is a professional non profit organisation, comprised predominantly of qualified clinical immunologists, allergists and immunology scientists. ASCIA aims to promote and advance the study and knowledge of immune and allergic diseases, including asthma, and advance and maintain the highest standards of scientific and medical practice among those professionally engaged in the areas of clinical immunology and allergy.
In Australia, people with asthma can get advice on managing asthma from their doctor, pharmacist, Asthma Foundation and from the National Asthma Campaign's website http://www.nationalasthma.org.au/
